Howard Schultz Success Facts

Inner Keys to Success:

  • WHEN INTUITION CALLS, DON’T SECOND GUESS, ACT: Howard Schultz acted the second he saw an opportunity and had felt intuition calling him. Once Schultz saw how coffee shops were created more like meeting places in Italy where people can enjoy socializing, Schultz decided to come back and pitch the idea to the original owners (founders) of Starbucks and negotiate for a stake in the company (he later took ownership of the whole company). Schultz’s quotes on his mom saying “She started crying. She said, ‘A coffee company? Are you crazy? Who’s going to buy coffee?’ But I just felt I had to follow my dreams.” This goes to show, intuitive action is ALWAYS the right action even when you cannot see how it’ll make your dreams come true.
  • THE POWER OF INSURMOUNTABLE DETERMINATION: Schultz stayed determined, even when others didn’t see his vision. Although the founders of Starbucks shut down Schultz’s idea because they didn’t want Starbucks to turn into a restaurant-type business, he opened his own shop to turn his idea into a reality. Ironically, the owners of Starbucks actually sold their company to Schultz a couple years later. This is a major trait in successful people, they believe in their ideas and don’t let anyone tell them otherwise. “So many times I have been told that it can’t be done. Again and again, I’ve had to use every ounce of perseverance to make it happen.”
  • STAY FOCUSED ON WHERE YOU WANT TO GO: As a kid, Schultz kept his mind off of poverty so he could go for bigger things. Howard Schultz was the only person in his family to attend college because of a scholarship he got from sports, and it is said that he would play sports to keep his mind off the living situation he was in, a poverty-struck neighborhood. He stated “It took years before I found my passion, but getting out of Brooklyn and earning a college degree gave me the courage to keep on dreaming.” He eventually became a GM of a coffee maker company which led him to his first encounter with the founders of Starbucks. When life isn’t going your way, don’t let it stray you, stay focused on where you want to go, and you will eventually get there.
