Top 10 Buckminster Fuller Quotes To Go From Despair To Determination

Buckminster Fuller was an American architect who popularized the geodesic dome. The beauty of the geodesic dome is that it could support its own weight without the need for columns or arches. When Mr. Fuller first commercialized the dome in 1949 it was an innovative solution that provided rugged and inexpensive shelters.

Mr. Fuller was the architect of the geodesic dome for the Expo 67 American Pavilion in Montreal. Fifty years ago the dome was one of the main attractions of the 1967 World’s Fair and it remains one of the iconic images of Expo 67. Today the dome is an environmental biosphere museum and a major tourist attraction in Montreal. The dome has been used for the original television series Battlestar Galactica and the film Quintet.

Mr. Fuller was the World President of Mensa from 1974 to 1983. He wrote over 30 books and even coined the term synergetic. He was also an inventor and designer.

Considering some of Mr. Fuller’s achievements, it is difficult to believe he had become so despondent that he considered taking his own life at the age of 32. He had lost his job in 1927 and had no savings. With a family to support and newly arrived daughter, Mr. Fuller thought that taking his own life would result in a life insurance windfall for his family. Mr. Fuller was also coping with the loss of his four-year old daughter who died in 1922.

While enduring this desperation and despondency, Mr. Fuller had an epiphany that changed his life and the world. He vowed to undertake “an experiment, to find what a single individual [could] contribute to changing the world and benefiting all humanity.” He committed himself to “the search for the principles governing the universe and help advance the evolution of humanity in accordance with them… finding ways of doing more with less to the end that all people everywhere can have more and more.” This was the beginning of Buckminster Fuller’s long journey of achievements that will always live on.
