A Vince Lombardi Quote On Humility

“Mental toughness is many things. It is humility because it behooves all of us to remember that simplicity is the sign of greatness and meekness is the sign of true strength. Mental toughness is spartanism with qualities of sacrifice, self-denial, dedication. It is fearlessness, and it is love.” -Vince Lombardi

As stated, mental toughness covers a broad range of ideas and attributes. Vince Lombardi tried always, to keep things simple. He spoke about his ideas as concepts. I believe the idea stated here relates to not making mental toughness any harder than necessary. If we will do the things we know we need to do, even when we don’t feel like doing them, then we are mentally tough.

Being strong on the field or on the job doesn’t mean strength is the only way we can be. Being mentally tough, is also being gentle when gentleness is what the situation calls for. There is strength in meekness. Adaptability allows us to be so many things… We can be patient when required. We can find the simplest method to accomplish our goals. We can be meek when it might be much easier to be gruff, or unkind.

What is Spartanism? Usually, it’s an every man for himself at all costs kind of attitude. Lombardi would have us realize we can take on the persona of spartanism and yet maintain dedication to our beliefs. He would have us understanding we can be both fearless and loving. Sacrifice and self-denial are part of the mental toughness spectrum particularly relating to our presence on a team, or working toward a team or group goal. Mental toughness is about strength, it’s about the strength of mind, it’s about making conscious decisions and taking massive action to support them. It’s taking appropriate action for the situation at hand. It’s the application of wisdom!
