“Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.” – Henry Van Dyke
Henry Van Dyke was an American Poet and Writer. He has been prolifically quoted and today is once aging being honored for his brilliant words, so elegantly captured for all eternity and gratefully shared here in my message, inspired by his poetic explanation, of Gratitude!
Gratitude is one of the most powerful forces available to mankind. With gratitude, we can accomplish unimaginable things… Gratitude literally unlocks the storehouse of possibilities. How can we describe the inward feeling of kindness received? Some might call it fulfillment, others might call it something different, this author calls it “Joy.”
No matter what we call it, the desire or the natural impulse to express the feeling associated with gratitude is as stated in the quote, “thankfulness.” The sensation we experience of wanting to reciprocate and express the warm feeling deep in the fiber of our being and expressed in the fabric of our soul, is thankfulness!
The act, the actual act of expressing our gratitude to another human being is the following of the impulse and the expression of that impulse with words that some how seem to fall immeasurably short of expressing what we really “feel.”
However inadequate our words may seem, we must still make the effort to express them in the best way we can, because gratitude of the heart, unexpressed, is like a gift beautifully wrapped, but never presented… It has no real value. The value only makes itself known to us and others, when expressed… It is only in the expression of our gratitude, through the action of thanksgiving, that both we and the recipient experience the magic of “JOY” that gratitude brings to life!
