Zinedine Zidane: Relentless Practice is the Only Way to Learn

“I reached this level by sheer dint of hard work, toiling away at scores of tricks and experiments. I used to play with the ball from dawn till dusk and just kept practicing. If I wasn’t playing matches, it was trying out one on one or two against two with a tennis ball. Then I used to try aiming at certain targets. That’s the only way to learn. And if I missed the target, I kept trying until I scored” – Zinedine Zidane.

Zinadine Zidane is one of the most skilled and graceful soccer players in the modern era. He has been heralded as a legend at every major club he has played for. This is no small feat, considering he has played for the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid. As a player, Zidane is a Ballon D’or winner, a world cup winner, a European Championship winner and a member of the FIFA 100 greatest living players of all time.

With the quote he once stated above, it is clear to see how he has achieved such greatness on and off the field. Zidane shows a clear obsession for his passion. Although his grace, vision, and athleticism is unrivaled, it is his inner mindset and relentless focus that has allowed him to perfect these talents to precision. Zidane proves that natural talent is not enough. Driven by passion, commitment, and focus one must maintain their goals and continue in pursuit of them, until they can be achieved.

The quote also demonstrates that one must not be satisfied by conventional means of training, but rather, should adjust their method in a way that is suitable. Have clearly defined goals so they have clearly defined targets. If these targets are missed, correct their method until they can be achieved.

This is the mindset of a champion, as “Zizou” has demonstrated. It is evident that his philosophy for soccer is his philosophy for life. As he has moved onto his next challenge, managing, he has achieved incredible results too. How you do one thing is how you do anything!

His pursuit of excellence commands respect from his players, “Los Galacticos” of Real Madrid. Managing some of the best and most expensive soccer players in the world has proven to be difficult for many of the best Managers in the world. However, Zidane has stepped into the role and excelled at it, Winning the Champions League in his first season in 2016, La Liga this most recent season, and stands on the verge of leading Real to their second consecutive Champions League in 2017. This is an almost unheard of feat, and it is not the result of luck. Zidane’s success is the result of his outlook on achievement and his passion and commitment to the game of soccer.

From his quote, we can all garner a grain of excellence. We must clearly define our goals, and “toll away at scores of tricks and experiments” in order to achieve them. We should not be deterred by failure. We should have the courage to take our shots. Success is the result of tolling away in a focused, directed, and even obsessed manner. As Real Madrid fans enjoy their clubs success, they can learn a great deal from their team’s dynamic Manager.
