In his case, high performance is the manifestation of his passion and love for what he does. Furthermore, it is sustained by a high degree of self-awareness and a commitment to all-round self-improvement. Within the modern era of hockey, we have been lucky to witness the events of such a great career. We are even more lucky that the player to whom the career belongs has provided us with his own foundation for success. With such a solid foundation, it is clear where Crosby’s success and high performance comes from, and it is evident that he will continue with this success.
“Dreams are so important. You need to have big goals and expect a lot of yourself but you need to enjoy the ride too.” – Sidney Crosby
In order to bridge the gap to make a dream a reality, you must be cognizant of the process. As Crosby alludes to, dreams are an integral part of success. We can think of dreams as the seeds of our goals. One must tend to these seeds and sustain and maintain them by keeping them vivid in the mind’s eye, and enjoying the journey of making them a reality. Crosby has remained in the spotlight since he was 15 years old, often referred to as “The Next One”, the predecessor of Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky. As the quote demonstrates, we can be sure that reality began as an intuition within Crosby and was nurtured into reality through a great deal of natural skill that has been cultivated through hard work, dedication, and passion.
2. “Whether you’re trying to learn in hockey or trying to learn in life, I’ve always tried to be observant and tried to learn more, tried to evolve, whether it’s as a hockey player or as a person. With each year, I try to do that”. – Sidney Crosby
One must maintain a high degree of self-awareness and commitment to growth to attain and maintain a high level of performance. The incremental improvements that are made each day aggregate to form the high performer. Sidney Crosby is mindful of this and applies this philosophy not only to his craft, but to himself as an individual. Improvement is a life style that he is committed to and his game is a reflection of this attitude.
3. “I’ve always had a passion for hockey,…That’s the key. You can’t be putting in time. You have to enjoy doing what you do”.- Sidney Crosby
Success is obtained when passion meets purpose. The game of hockey was Crosby’s purpose, and he provided a great deal of passion to succeed. As a result of this, we has won numerous championships and individual awards. His attitude towards his purpose is once again transcendent- of time in this case.
4. “The biggest thing for me is the passion that I’ve always had for hockey. I remember growing up, no matter what I did in life, my parents always told me to try to do my best and be my best. I can say going through different things that passion is the most important part. It’s not skills or talent or any of that stuff” – Sidney Crosby
This point by Crosby puts a smile on the face. It is made ever more salient by the fact that it is so true. “Skills, talent, or any of that stuff” are the manifestation of a passionate attitude towards your goal of choice. It is undoubtedly true that one may have natural skills and talent. However, without passion one cannot cultivate these tools to achieve the heights that they are capable of. In the same token, one can start out completely hopeless on their path to achieving their goals, yet an effort sustained by passion will allow for one to overcome their humble beginnings and cultivate their talents and skills. From this it can be said that skills and talent are the consequence of a passionate attitude towards ones goals.
5. “I promise to play for the logo on the front, not the name on the back” – Sidney Crosby
This is such a profound statement by a living legend. One would expect such a great hockey player to maintain a bit of pride be driven by his ego, yet, Crosby remains transcendent of these things. Crosby has a bigger purpose and remains accountable to his hockey club first and foremost. This is the trait of a true leader and it is no wonder why he is the unequivocal leader of the Pittsburgh Penguins and a fan favorite. Crosby’s career stands as a testament to the fact that when you have a larger purpose, a purpose beyond your-self, you are capable of much greater things. This is because you are accountable for far more than just yourself. In Crosby’s case, he is accountable to each and every Penguins fan, and boy has he delivered. We can all learn from this, and be accountable to more than just ourselves. We can supplement our goals, and sustained passion for achieving these goals, with accountability to a purpose beyond ourselves.
