Two Inner Principles That Demonstrate How Racing Legend Mario Andretti Achieved Success

“If everything seems under control, your just not going fast enough”- Mario Andretti

One would imagine that control is of paramount importance to a man like Mario Andretti. Control is what allows him to excel at his craft. The American racing legend was won numerous racing titles in Formula one, NASCAR, and IndyCar amongst others. All these reasons are what make Mr. Andretti’s philosophy all the more interesting. When we examine this quote we can really appreciate it’s metaphorical significance.

Andretti has maintained his edge by pushing the limits of both his vehicles and his mind. This is how he maintains his edge, because he is willing to push the limit. The extent to which he is willing to push himself to his edge is the difference between himself and other expert drivers. As we sit in the driver’s seat of our own lives, we must be willing to do the same. Of course, we must be mindful of how far our edge can be pushed, to avoid over exertion or loss of control. However, simultaneously, we must be willing to lose a bit of control, to extend our control. The essence of this paradox is made clear when we put it in the racing context. The faster the driver’s push their machines, the greater the risk of losing control. However, the driver accepts this risk and trusts their inner sense of control to execute the sharp turns, bends, and maneuvers around other drivers. Ultimately this aggregates to a greater sense of control because the driver can both accepts the fact that they may lose control, while trusting themselves to stay in control.

In our own lives, we can apply these principles. We can increase the pace of our lives by expanding our comfort zones in a mindful way that encourages growth. We can take on more challenging projects at work, or run that extra mile. We can express our passions through new hobbies, meet new people, and learn new things. The objective is to increase the pace of our own lives, with the intention of being able to handle this increased pace, expand our edges and truly live life to the fullest.

“Desire is the key to motivation, but its determination and a commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal-a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek”- Mario Andretti

Spoken like a true Wiseman, Andretti has supplied us with another profound statement. As we expand our comfort zones, passion and desire must be supplemented with a commitment to excellence. This means setting standards or performance that are attainable. Excellence is how you define it, and if you live by your own standards (presumably high ones), then you will achieve both personal growth and a high standard of output. With inner principles such as these, it’s no wonder how has had such a successful career. We can all apply Mario Andretti’s inner principles to attain the success we are all seeking.
