Inner Keys to Success:

  • ENVISION THE LIFE YOU WANT ON A REGULAR: Taylor Swift was a big dreamer, and her dreams often consisted of her signing on the big stage. When most people were learning to ride a bike, at the innocent age of 5 she had the imagination to conjure up her own lyrics. She was often quoted to be daydreaming as a kid of being in the lime light. After envisioning her success over and over again, she would pay selective attention as to how she could make that which inspired her, a reality. Swift states “I always wanted to know, and I always used to daydream, about what it would be like to stand on a really big stage and sing songs for a lot of people, songs that I had written… Daydreaming was kind of my No. 1 thing when I was little, because I didn’t have much of a social life going on.”
  • HAVE THE COURAGE TO PURSUE YOUR DESIRES EVEN WHEN REJECTED: Taylor Swift was and is a highly courageous woman. In fact, at the young age of 11 she had the confidence to sing the “Star Spangled Banner” (the US National Anthem)  at a Philadelphia 76ers game. At that same age, she was convinced that Nashville was the Country Music capital and would convince her mom enough that the two would often travel there to try and get a contract. At 12 years old, Swift was bold enough to approach music executives to get a contract, and even though she was often rejected, she kept moving forward. “A lot of people ask me, ‘How did you have the courage to walk up to record labels when you were 12 or 13 and jump right into the music industry?’ It’s because I knew I could never feel the kind of rejection that I felt in middle school. Because in the music industry, if they’re gonna say no to you, at least they’re gonna be polite about it.”
  • FOCUS ON YOUR OWN PATH, EVEN IF IT MEANS BEING DIFFERENT: Taylor Swift often states that as a kid she didn’t have much of a social life, but instead was wholeheartedly focused on country music. In fact, instead of playing with others, at age 10, she was working on her art performing at local events. Swift says growing up was a bunch of awkward phases: “So . . . middle school? Awkward.Having a hobby that’s different from everyone else’s? Awkward. Singing the national anthem on weekends instead of going to sleepovers? More awkward. Braces? Awkward. Gain a lot of weight before you hit the growth spurt? Awkward. Frizzy hair, don’t embrace the curls yet? Awkward. Try to straighten it? Awkward! So many phases!” This later built her into a confident young woman with high standards, as she even left her first contract because she didn’t want to be a writer whereby other singers would sing her written songs, but instead wanted be both a writer and a singer. Scott Borchetta, who later signed Swift under Big Machine Records states “She has a real inner vision, a real inner directedness.”

“I’m intimidated by the fear of being average.” – Taylor Swift

Inspiring Fact:

Taylor Swift actually taught herself to play guitar when she was only 12 years old. This, coupled with the fact that she writes the majority of her songs makes her the total package. So much so that she’s even the first artist since the legendary Beatles to have six or more weeks at the #1 spot for three studio albums.
