Magic Johnson’s 3 Key Lessons For Success:

An Intense Desire, Magic Johnson Had A Yearning Passion For What He Wanted To Achieve:

Magic Johnson’s mom bought him a basketball at age 5, and his passion for the sport began. Johnson states he’d take that ball with him literally everywhere, and if the school bell rang at 7 am, he’d be outside shooting at 6 am. He’d practice, practice, and practice. Johnson’s mom stated that the neighbors used to joke and ask “does he sleep with the ball too?” and she stated “sometimes.” Johnson had an extreme, undeniable, heart-quenching passion for the game of basketball. Magic “Earvin” Johnson even acquired the nickname Magic from being watched by a sportswriter in high school where he scored 16 points. As for Johnson’s business mentality, he states “I am a businessman. This is what I do each and every day. I love it. I love coming to work. I never have a bad day.”

Magic Johnson ALWAYS Put 110% In Everything He Did:

Here’s an unforgettable lesson that changed Magic Johnson’s perspective on work ethic: His dad told him to put the trash in the trunk (when it was snowing outside), Johnson did a “half-way” job and didn’t get the frozen parts of the trash, so his dad grabbed him, and dragged him back and said “You know what, if you do this job half way, you’re gonna practice half way as a basketball player, you’re gonna do your homework and be a student that’s only putting in half the effort.” At this moment, Magic Johnson’s mindset, and beliefs changed he states his effort went up drastically, and he became a perfectionist. In college, Magic Johnson went head to head with NBA legend Larry Bird, Bird came out victorious, and Johnson’s drive became even stronger. He states in Bloomberg’s Game Changers, that after that season he seldom went out that summer, he devoted his time to basketball and training because his mentality was to be the best.

Magic Johnson Dreamed And Visualized As A Kid, But Most Importantly, He BELIEVED!:

As a kid Johnson worked various jobs to support his basketball hobby including as a grocery store clerk, and cleaning offices for two African American businessmen. The businessmen inspired Magic Johnson to dream big, as he states before meeting them, he didn’t know that African American’s even owned office buildings, and car dealerships and stuff like that. This is where Magic Johnson’s other dream of being an entrepreneur developed. In this office, Johnson would even pretend to be the CEO, when Gregory Eaton (the CEO of the building) wasn’t around, Magic Johnson would sit in the big office chair, push the intercom and ask for a cup of coffee as if he was the “big poncho,” in a sense, Johnson was visualizing his future. Johnson states “I wanted to do two things when I was growing up. I wanted to play in the NBA, and I wanted to be a businessman after my basketball career was over, and that is what I am doing now.”  Watch the video here.

I motivate others by making sure that they understand to go after their dreams and don’t let anyone tell you you can’t. If you are motivated enough and put the work in that you can achieve anything in life that you set your mind to. – Quote by Magic Johnson
