James Dean Allowed The Hardships In His Life To Build His Character, Not Tear Him Down:
The one person who James Dean was close to, the one person that understood him, his mother, passed away when Dean was 9 due to uterine cancer. His father was unable to care for him, and therefore young Dean was sent to live with his sister. This led Dean to befriend a pastor (Rev. James DeWeerd) who took an interest in the young kids life, however, some sources say that their relationship was intimate and the pastor sexually abused Dean. Nonetheless, the two were friends up until Deans’ senior year and the pastor encouraged the youngsters love of car racing, theater, and bullfighting. All of these tragic events could have broken down the actor, however, he somehow mustered up the courage to become one of the greatest actors in history, despite only being in the industry for 5 years before his passing.
James Dean Had Immense Focus And Was Exceptional In All That He Pursued:
Despite always feeling misunderstood, and going through various tragedies growing up, Dean was able to excel in almost every endeavor he took on. In high school, he got good grades and was considered quite popular. He was also involved in various curricular activities including basketball, baseball, drama, and public speaking. Dean then studied law in college, and majored in theater. This carried out into his acting career where he was able to become such a massive legend even though he was only staring in 3 films that skyrocketed his fame. He understood how you do anything is how you do everything.
James Dean Left A Legacy In A Span of 5 Years:
Dean only acted from 1950 to 1955, within that short span, he left a legacy of being one of the greatest actors of all time. He is still remembered through merchandise (such as posters), famous quotes (such as the “dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today”), and his iconic bad boy expressions. How was he able to execute such memorable roles in a short period of time? Some could say natural talent, and some could say his innate ability to stand out and be different, be uniquely himself. Dean growing up was always a symbol of being authentic, throughout his life many claim he was bisexual, however at a time when anything other than heterosexual was highly shunned upon, Dean stayed true to himself. This was carried out into his acting. James Dean once quoted “to grasp the full significance of life is the actor’s duty; to interpret it his problem; and to express it his dedication.” In the movie Rebel Without A Cause, James Dean depicted the definition of someone who wasn’t understood but still wouldn’t conform, a character that attracted the attention of decades to come.
